We are looking for a Legal Counsel to join our collaborative, dynamic and high performing Public Law team.

We are a team of public lawyers working in a flexible, collaborative and supportive environment.


This is an opportunity to work across the spectrum of public law issues within a complex organisation. The work is fast-paced, varied and high-quality with the potential to focus on your areas of interest. In the last 12 months we have been involved in high-profile judicial review litigation, supported council’s committees, responded to human rights claims, and advised on Te Tiriti o Waitangi issues.  


You will be responsible for providing sound and robust legal advice on a wide range of public law matters with the support of senior colleagues.  You will be hard working, adaptable, and able to work with a degree of autonomy. We are looking for someone who enjoys a diverse range of work, juggling multiple interesting issues and engaging with a wide range of people within and outside the organisation.


You will play a critical role in ensuring that Auckland Council acts lawfully, fairly and reasonably.

He kōrero mōu: About you 


You’ll have a minimum of 3-4 years' legal experience preferably in public law and a real interest in public law issues. With political and organisational acumen, you will be proactive, confident and able to work collaboratively.


This is an opportunity to use your interpersonal and relationship building skills while working across a range of matters. You will be focused on solutions and be able to support the organisation in managing legal risk.
