Auckland Council’s Councillor Support team has an opportunity for a permanent full-time Lead Advisor to join the team. Reporting to the Head of Governance Services, you will be based in the Auckland city centre with some flexibility to work from home. 

 

This role is critical for offering strategic advice on the councils committee work programmes to our elected members, enabling high-quality overview of those work programmes and leading to being better informed decision-making. As a Lead Advisor you will work collaboratively with an “all-of-council” approach to policy issues. 

 

Day-to-day you could expect to work on:
•    Providing balanced political advice to committee chairs and other members while remaining impartial
•    Supporting our Councillor Support team with purposeful advice and political oversight of the issues.
•    Use your relationship skills to develop virtual teams alongside senior leadership, ensuring seamless wrap-around support in advisory, and technical governance for the elected members you will be supporting.
•    Provide thought advice to the Head of Governance Services.

This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about Auckland. You will be politically savvy with the ability to process complex information quicky and provide focussed unbiased advice and guidance to members of the Governing Body. 

 

Success in this role requires strong relationship management skills, self-awareness, resilience, and the confidence to thrive in high-pressure situations. You will likely have experience in large, complex and potentially political organisations.

 

We are specifically looking for:
•    Tertiary qualified with a relevant degree, for example in public policy, public management, or five years minimum equivalent relative experience 
•    Strong understanding and appreciation of the democratic process and in particular local government
•    Someone who can work independently using their relationship skills to progress and influence councillor outcomes.
•    Someone who is very comfortable working with elected members and senior staff on complex issues.
•    Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, gained through providing advice to a range of stakeholders, excellent digital competency
