A rare opportunity has become available for an exceptional senior finance leader to bring their expertise to Auckland Council, an organisation responsible for delivering a diverse range of services and infrastructure that support more than 1.8 million Aucklanders.
As Head of Finance Business Partnering, you will play a critical leadership role, partnering with Executive Leadership Team members and General Managers to drive financial and business performance across a significant portfolio. Leading a high-performing team of Finance Business Partners, you will deliver strategic insight, challenge thinking, and enable informed decision-making that drives better outcomes for Tāmaki Makaurau.
This role will support either our Community Directorate (Parks, Community Facilities, Pools and Leisure, Recreation, Arts, Libraries, Licensing and Compliance) or Resilience & Environment (Building Consenting, Waste, Emergency Management and Environmental Services).
With work underway to shape Auckland's next Long-term Plan, this is a unique opportunity to contribute to decisions that will influence the future of our services, assets, and investment priorities for years to come.
What you will be responsible for
- Provide trusted financial and commercial advice to senior executives and business leaders.
- Drive financial performance, operational efficiency, and value creation across your portfolio.
- Lead and develop a team of highly skilled Finance Business Partners.
- Deliver meaningful financial insights and performance analysis to support strategic decision-making.
- Challenge existing practices and identify opportunities for continuous improvement and commercial optimisation.
- Build strong partnerships across the organisation to support the achievement of Auckland Council's strategic objectives.

You are an influential and commercially minded finance leader with a proven ability to operate at both strategic and operational levels within a large, complex organisation.
What you will bring:
- Senior financial and commercial leadership experience.
- Significant experience in finance business partnering, financial performance management, and strategic planning.
- Strong capability in budgeting, commercial management, performance measurement, and business transformation.
- A track record of influencing executive stakeholders and driving improved commercial outcomes.
- Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to translate complex data into actionable business insights.
- Proven success leading, mentoring, and developing high-performing teams.
- Outstanding relationship-building and stakeholder management skills.
- A bachelor’s degree in business, Commerce, Finance, or a related discipline.
- CAANZ or equivalent professional qualification.
- Experience within local government, large public sector organisations, or highly complex corporate environments will be advantageous.
