He angitūtanga: The opportunity

 

We’re looking for a Gardener to join Auckland Zoo on a fixed-term contract until April 2028. As part of the horticulture team, this role is responsible for maintaining the zoo’s planted landscapes to a high standard, including gardens within animal habitats and across the wider zoo grounds. You’ll play an important part in creating beautiful, functional spaces that enhance animal wellbeing and visitor experiences, while also supporting the zoo’s broader conservation mission. There may also be opportunities to contribute to field conservation initiatives linked to horticulture projects, with occasional weekend and public holiday work required.

 

Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Landscape & Garden Care – Maintain zoo gardens, exhibits, lawns, and planted areas through planting, irrigation, pest management, and general upkeep.
  • Horticultural Expertise – Apply plant care knowledge including identification, pruning, transplantation, and pest control.
  • Conservation & Project Support – Contribute to conservation initiatives and development projects across the zoo alongside other teams.
  • Visitor Experience & Teamwork – Support engaging visitor experiences while collaborating with colleagues, maintaining records, and contributing to smooth team operations.

 

Please note this role operates from Tuesday to Saturday however flexibility to work outside of these core hours is required as the zoo operates from Monday to Sunday.

He kōrero mōu: About you

 

This role is suited to someone with a passion for horticulture and conservation, along with some experience in botanical, horticultural, or landscaping environments. A strong team mindset is essential, with the ability to work collaboratively and build positive relationships with colleagues and visitors alike. The role requires high levels of energy and physical fitness, as the work is outdoors in all weather conditions. Practical experience with tools and machinery such as tractors or chainsaws is advantageous, alongside good communication skills, basic Microsoft Office capability, and a genuine interest in New Zealand and exotic plants and conservation issues.

 

Ideally, you will also have:

 

  • A full New Zealand manual driver’s licence, with an HT licence and spray applicator certification desirable.
  • A relevant qualification in horticulture or botany (or working towards one) would be an advantage.
