Environmental Monitoring & Research Intern - Air Quality

Auckland Council’s Summer Internship Programme is from 23 November to 19 February and offers paid, hands-on experience at the Living Wage rate of $29.90 per hour. If you’re in your second-to-last year of study or continuing into a master’s programme, this is your chance to grow your skills, build your network and contribute to meaningful mahi for Tāmaki Makaurau. 

He angitūtanga: The opportunity 
We have a fantastic opportunity for a student with an interest in air quality and monitoring and research to join the Air, Land and Biodiversity Team in Auckland Council’s Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring Unit.  

We collect and analyse air quality data from across the Auckland region and in this role, you would be able to contribute to a series of projects that look to better understand and communicate this emissions data and urban air quality issues as well as assist in managing and learning about our long-term monitoring programme.  

If you have an interest in outdoor air quality monitoring, modelling, emission inventories or atmospheric research, and would like to better understand New Zealand’s regulatory framework for air quality and local government processes – this could be the role for you.  

During the placement, there will also be the opportunity to see how all the environmental programmes undertaken in EEMU are conducted across the teams.

You have a collaborative approach but can undertake tasks independently and proactively where required. You have a passion for the environment and managing and analysing data and understand the value of turning data into information and knowledge.  

To be eligible for this opportunity: 

• Be enrolled in a degree for environmental science or geography with a focus on meteorology/atmospheric sciences or similar, and completing your penultimate or last year of study 

• Preference will be given to students completing their BSc and intending to progress to a PGDipSci, BSc (Hons) or MSc. 

• Be eligible to work in New Zealand full-time from 23 November 2026 – 19 February 2027
