Auckland Council’s Mayoral Office has an opportunity for a Deputy Chief of Staff (Strategic Policy & Communications). This role will report directly to the Chief of Staff. 


Supporting the development and delivery of the Mayor’s priorities, the role is dynamic and no day will be the same. 


Working closely with the Chief of Staff, the Deputy Chief of Staff (Strategic Policy & Communications) will be responsible for:

  • the delivery of high quality, policy advice on the Mayor’s strategic priorities and key initiatives
  • commissioning and reviewing external advice and analysis of policy options
  • the delivery of high quality communications material and media management
  • active issues management and strong external relations

This role requires strong knowledge in government and public services. You will likely have experience in senior leadership roles from within complex organisations.


We will be looking for:

  • Significant experience working in large, highly complex environments.  A strong knowledge of local government is desirable 
  • Proven track record of delivery in a complex policy environment 
  • Knowledge of communications, strategies, and planning 
  • A high level of political and policy acumen 
  • Proven ability to develop strong and trusted relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to build and lead a team
