We’re looking for a Data Platform Engineer to help shape Auckland Council’s modern data landscape. You’ll design and maintain scalable, secure cloud platforms that enable data-driven decision-making across the organisation. Using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools like Terraform, you’ll automate and manage deployment of high-performance data infrastructure, ensuring systems are integrated, reliable, and ready to scale. Your work will power smarter insights, better services, and more sustainable outcomes for Auckland.

 

He kōrero mō te tūranga | What You’ll Be Doing

 

  • Use Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) practices (e.g. Terraform) to manage and automate deployment of cloud resources.
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable, high-performing data pipelines that enable seamless data flow and integration.
  • Develop and optimise cloud-based data storage solutions, including data lakes, warehouses, and databases.
  • Manage and enhance modern data platforms (e.g. Snowflake, Azure) to ensure reliability, availability, and performance.
  • Implement robust data security practices, including encryption, access controls, and compliance with governance standards.
  • Collaborate closely with Data Engineers, Analysts, Scientists, and Technology Services teams to deliver fit-for-purpose, connected data solutions.

He kōrero mōu: About you

 

You’re an experienced data professional skilled in building and optimising cloud-based data solutions that drive insight and innovation. Confident across Azure, AWS, or GCP, you bring expertise in data warehousing tools such as Snowflake, Redshift, or BigQuery and design scalable, high-performing systems. You use Infrastructure-as-Code tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible to automate deployment and configuration, and are hands-on with Fivetran, DBT, Spark, Airflow, Informatica/IDMC, or Dataiku. Proficient in Python, SQL, or Java/Scala, you build efficient real-time and batch pipelines using Kafka, Nifi, or Kinesis, with an agile, pragmatic mindset focused on enabling smarter data-driven decisions.

 

Key requirements include:

 

  • 7+ years’ experience in Data and Analytics roles within complex, data-mature organisations.
  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Cloud certification (Azure, AWS, or GCP) preferred but not essential.
  • Strong understanding of data warehousing, BI architecture, and ETL processes, with experience delivering end-to-end data solutions.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across functions and deliver outcomes that enhance organisational efficiency and customer value.
  • Public sector experience is advantageous but not required.
