He angitūtanga: The opportunity
We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join our high-performing, solutions-focused team. In this role, you’ll design, implement, and maintain data pipelines from various source systems into our new data lake, ensuring efficient and reliable data flows that support Council’s data infrastructure. We’re not looking for a senior – instead, we want a strong team player who has experience in data engineering, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and brings cultural fit as well as technical skills. Experience working in Agile and SAFE frameworks is important, along with a collaborative mindset and a drive to deliver results.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines (e.g. with Snowflake) while ensuring security and efficiency.
- Continuously optimize pipelines to improve performance, reliability, and best practice adoption.
- Develop, document, and maintain ETL/ELT processes and data models for consistency and reuse.
- Collaborate with peers across analytics, data governance, and engineering teams to deliver aligned solutions.
- Contribute to evolving data engineering practices by supporting automation, innovation, and knowledge sharing.

He kōrero mōu: About you
You’ll bring at least five years’ experience in data and analytics roles within organisations of high data maturity, supported by a technical or professional qualification in Computer Science, IT, Statistics, Engineering, or a related discipline. A strong understanding of data warehousing and BI architecture is essential, including ETL processes, relational and dimensional modelling, and end-to-end solution development. Just as importantly, you’ll be a team player who can work collaboratively across functions, keeping customer needs at the centre. Experience from banking or finance industries will be highly valued.
Key Skills and Experience:
- Proven background as a Data Engineer (or similar role) with hands-on experience designing and building data pipelines.
- Proficiency in key modern data technologies, especially dbt for data transformation and Snowflake for data warehousing; experience with Fivetran and HRIS/Payroll data is an advantage.
- Solid experience building relational data models and working with pipeline orchestration tools.
- Strong understanding of data modelling, ETL processes, data warehousing concepts, and agile ways of working.
- Ability to improve operational efficiency, enhance service delivery, and strengthen information management across the organisation.
