He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing unit is seeking a permanent, full-time Rail Safety Specialist to join our Contractor Safety Team. This hybrid role is based in the Auckland CBD, with three days in the office and travel to sites as required.

Reporting to the HSW Contractor Safety Manager, you will provide specialist safety advice, support and assurance across rail, construction, infrastructure and other high-risk contractor activities where Council has influence, control or overlapping PCBU duties. While rail-related work is a key focus, the role will also support broader contractor safety activity across Auckland Council, including construction, infrastructure, maintenance and other high-risk contractor work.

The remuneration range for these roles are $122,783 - $144,450 depending on experience and skillset. Auckland Council's KiwiSaver contribution is additional to base salary.

Ngā kawenga matua: Key responsibilities

This position works closely with internal stakeholders, contractors, consultants, rail operators, access providers, regulators, emergency services, and other PCBUs to ensure effective consultation, cooperation, and coordination of health, safety, and wellbeing responsibilities.

Day to day, you will:

• Provide specialist safety advice across rail, construction, infrastructure and high-risk contractor activity to project teams, contract managers, asset owners, HSW Business Partners and senior leaders.

• Support consultation, cooperation and coordination with contractors, consultants, rail operators, access providers, construction partners, service providers, regulators, emergency services and other PCBUs.

• Conduct and support contractor safety assurance activities across rail-related, construction, infrastructure, maintenance and other high-risk contractor work, including site inspections, control verification, event follow-up and validation of corrective actions.

• Review and advise on HSW plans, risk assessments, safety-in-design, project-specific safety plans, assurance records and contractor performance reviews.

• Support learning from contractor safety events, including rail, construction and infrastructure-related high-potential and notifiable events, investigations, learning reviews and corrective actions.

• Provide safety insights, analysis and reporting to support governance, due diligence, contractor performance monitoring and continuous improvement.

He kōrero mōu: About you

You are a practical safety professional with strong rail, construction, infrastructure or high-risk contractor safety experience. You can apply technical safety, contractor management, risk management and assurance expertise in complex operating environments, and translate technical requirements into clear advice.

We will be looking for:

• Minimum NZQA Level 6 Diploma, or equivalent, in a relevant safety discipline.

• At least 7 years’ experience in rail safety, contractor safety, construction safety, infrastructure safety or a comparable high-risk operational environment.

• Working knowledge of rail and/or infrastructure safety risk management, contractor management, overlapping PCBU duties and assurance practices.

• Technical expertise in contractor safety management and occupational health, safety and wellbeing, with practical risk-based judgement.

• Data analysis and reporting skills to identify trends, risks, assurance gaps and improvement opportunities.

• Desirable: audit and assurance, learning reviews or investigations, safety-in-design, and coaching leaders or project teams.
