He angitūtanga: The opportunity

We’re looking for an experienced conservator to join the Archives team in a permanent, full-time role, supporting the long-term care and accessibility of Auckland Council’s archives. This role focuses on the conservation and preservation of predominantly paper-based records, ensuring they are managed in line with professional best practice and the requirements of Archives New Zealand and the Public Records Act 2005.

Key focus of this role will include:

  • Carrying out condition assessments, implementing remedial treatments, managing archival housing and storage solutions, and maintaining accurate documentation and reports
  • Leading disaster preparedness planning and overseeing conservation
  • Beyond hands-on conservation work, this role plays a key part in outreach and knowledge-sharing.  This includes providing training and guidance to staff, contractors, and stakeholders, offering practical advice on preservation procedures and handling of archival materials
  • Collaborate both within council teams and with external partners like Archives New Zealand to promote the value of council’s conservation work through presentations and visitor engagement
  • Support the safe handling, packing, transport, display, and digitisation of archival materials, ensuring fragile items are protected at every step.

This is a unique opportunity to safeguard Auckland’s documentary heritage while shaping how we care for it into the future.
