Auckland Council’s Environmental Services department has an opportunity for a Conservation Advisor within the Regional Delivery team.

This is a Fixed Term full-time opportunity – ending 27/08/2027.

This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in improving Auckland’s biodiversity outcomes by leading the delivery of regional conservation initiatives. A significant focus of this role will be managing the Regional Environment and Natural Heritage Grant project, ensuring funding is delivered effectively, processes are strengthened, and conservation projects across Tāmaki Makaurau are supported to achieve meaningful environmental outcomes.

Working as part of Environmental Services Regional Delivery team, you’ll bring your conservation expertise, project management skills and relationship-building capability to a role that combines environmental impact with programme delivery. You’ll work collaboratively within a virtual team environment, helping to shape and continuously improve a programme that supports some of Auckland’s most important conservation priorities.

Day-to-day you could expect to work on:

• Managing and continuously improving the Regional Environment and Natural Heritage Grant project, ensuring efficient delivery and strong outcomes
• Delivering regional conservation and biosecurity projects that protect and enhance Auckland’s biodiversity
• Building and maintaining strong relationships with mana whenua, council teams and community groups to support positive biodiversity outcomes
• Supporting the implementation of the Regional Pest Management Plan, including surveillance, compliance, incursion response and direct delivery where required
• Monitoring and reporting on project outcomes, undertaking quality assurance activities and ensuring improvements are identified and implemented
• Responding to conservation and biosecurity-related requests, working with technical specialists where required

This role requires an experienced conservation or biodiversity professional with strong project delivery skills and the ability to manage complex programmes, build trusted relationships and deliver outcomes that make a difference across the region.

You’ll be someone who enjoys bringing structure to complexity, improving processes and working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders. You’ll be motivated by the opportunity to enable conservation outcomes at scale and contribute to protecting Auckland’s natural environment.

We are looking for someone with:

• Experience delivering conservation, biodiversity or biosecurity projects, with a sound understanding of environmental management practices
• Demonstrated project management experience, including the ability to coordinate competing priorities and deliver successful outcomes
• Strong relationship-building skills, with experience working collaboratively with mana whenua, communities, stakeholders and internal teams
• Experience working in the conservation, biodiversity or biosecurity sector (ideally 5+ years), with relevant qualifications or equivalent experience
• A full, clean NZ driver’s licence

It would also be advantageous if you have:

• Experience managing environmental funding, grants or community-based conservation programmes
• Knowledge of the Regional Pest Management Plan and relevant biosecurity legislation
• The ability to hold, or obtain, an Instrument of Appointment under the Biosecurity Act and Resource Management Act
