He angitūtanga: The opportunity
We’re looking for a skilled and versatile Communications Advisor to support the Deputy Mayor directly, while being a member of the broader Mayoral Office team. This is a dynamic, fast-paced role where no two days are the same — ideal for someone with newsroom experience and a knack for crafting clear, compelling communications across multiple channels.
You’ll help deliver a communications strategy that builds the Deputy Mayor’s profile and connects Aucklanders with key priorities and initiatives in relation to the Mayor’s. From coordinating media responses and preparing speaking notes, to managing digital content and social media presence, you’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring consistent, effective communication.
Key aspects of the role include:
- Supporting the delivery of consistent messaging and tone across all platforms, including print, digital, and social media
- Acting as a key media contact — coordinating responses, preparing columns and statements, and facilitating interviews
- Drafting high-quality speeches, talking points, digital content creation and other external communications across a wide range of policy and community issues
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including close liaison with the Mayoral Office and wider council teams

You’ll bring a strong background in communications or journalism and a proven ability to manage complex, high-profile issues with confidence and professionalism. Experienced in communications, you’re comfortable engaging with media, writing clear and compelling copy, and providing sound advice in a fast-moving environment. Creative production experience would be advantageous for this role.
A natural relationship builder, you’re skilled at working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders and thrive in a team setting. You combine strong organisational and communication skills with a solutions-focused mindset and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Being the main go-to for media queries for the Deputy Mayor, some work may fall on weekends or evenings.
A tertiary qualification in communications, journalism, or a related discipline is required. Above all, you’ll have the judgement, initiative, and interpersonal style to represent the Deputy Mayor’s office with credibility and integrity.
