He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Transport (AT) requires a new Chair for its board in 2019.

AT’s key priorities for the next three years fall in the following areas:

  • To Improve the safety of the transport system.
  • Deliver an efficient and effective transport network to increase patronage and mode share, working with the NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Council to implement a comprehensive optimisation programme to achieve as much as possible from the existing network.
  • Improve customer experience and engagement with the transport system, to successfully deliver transport services, infrastructure and information, and to maintain positive and constructive relationships with all parties including local boards, transport users and the wider community.
  • Implement process improvements to streamline consenting and engagement with Auckland Council.
  • Ensure value for money across Auckland Council’s activities, making the most of funding and resources.
  • AT will play an essential role in supporting the wider Council group to facilitate urban regeneration and placemaking.

Competencies required:

  • Exceptional leadership capability and experience of heading up a complex organisation with multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrable ability to interact effectively and regularly with the senior executive team and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strength of character and resilience.
  • Chair experience.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a political/governmental environment.
  • Some knowledge of transport is desirable but not essential, however, public sector understanding, with the ability to process information quickly is a key requirement.
  • Willingness and ability to collaborate across the Auckland CCO family.
  • Demonstrate financial accountability with close review of current and proposed activities to deliver value for money.
  • Responsiveness to Auckland Council as a stakeholder/decision-maker.
  • Understanding as to the context of the Central Government agencies.
  • Independence of thinking.
  • Uphold the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and promote Maori outcomes.

Commitment requirement:

The term of appointment is three years, with the possibility of re-appointment up to a maximum of three terms, subject to evidence of effective performance.
