This is an exciting opportunity to join the Outdoor Experience Team within Council’s Play, Sport and Recreation unit as a casual Outdoor Recreation Instructor, to provide young people and families with opportunities for connection, personal development and enrichment through positive engagement in the outdoors.
This is a casual role, based in Otara and you will need the ability to work flexible hours across 7 days as required
Ngā kawenga matua: Key responsibilities
- Deliver engaging, safe outdoor recreation programmes for school students and community groups across Auckland.
- Facilitate experiential learning activities including kayaking, biking, bushcraft, hiking, archery, and environmental education.
- Create positive, inclusive experiences that build participants’ confidence, skills, wellbeing, and connection to the outdoors.
- Support programme planning, preparation, logistics, and equipment management while maintaining high safety standards.
- Work collaboratively within a mobile instructor team, adapting delivery to diverse groups, locations, and cultural contexts.

He kōrero mōu: About you
Key skills and attributes we will be looking for include:
- Passionate, energetic facilitator who enjoys working outdoors with children, youth, adults and families to build confidence, wellbeing and connection through experiential learning.
- Practical skills and experience delivering outdoor recreation activities, particularly flatwater kayaking and recreational biking (qualifications an advantage).
- Strong communication and rapport‑building skills, with the ability to engage diverse communities and work respectfully across cultures, including an appreciation of Māori tikanga.
- Safety‑focused and well organised, with experience in programme planning, logistics, risk management and high‑quality delivery in outdoor environments.
- Reliable team player with flexibility to work casual hours, holding a full driver’s licence, current First Aid certificate, and able to meet police vetting and drug‑testing requirements.

You will be able to focus on active outdoor recreation and positively influence the well-being of youth and families. This is a great opportunity to further develop your skills in customer interaction, leadership, planning and facilitation. In-house training will be provided.
