He angitūtanga: The opportunity

 

Auckland Council’s Emergency Management team has a 12 Month opportunity for a Capability Advisor to join this dedicated and passionate team. This role is based in the city centre with some flexibility to work from home or a Council hub.

 

Reporting to the Capability Manager, you'll play a key role in strengthening how we prepare for and respond to emergencies. This role is pivotal in developing the skills, confidence, and operational readiness of Auckland Council staff, volunteers, and partner agencies.

 

As a Capability Advisor, you’ll support the delivery of training and capability-building initiatives, particularly for Auckland Council Emergency Support (ACES) staff and partner agencies. You’ll design and deliver programmes aligned with the Emergency Management Capability Framework, ensuring consistency, compliance, and coordination across the Auckland Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group.

 

In this role, you can expect to:

 

  • Facilitate or co-facilitate emergency management training as part of the ACES development programme
  • Support the design and development of fit-for-purpose training resources, tools, and courses for CDEM Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS) functions and agency partners working within the Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC) and across other AEM teams
  • Contribute to inter-agency and community capability-building efforts across the Auckland CDEM Group

 

This role will be required to participate in the AEM on-call and stand-by emergency response system and perform emergency response and recovery functions, as necessary.

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring a strong background in designing and delivering training within complex, multi-agency environments. You’ll be an effective communicator with the interpersonal skills needed to work confidently across cross-functional and virtual teams. 

 

You’ll be adept at managing competing priorities while delivering on complex and challenging outcomes. Your ability to coordinate stakeholders across agencies, will be a valuable part of your contribution in this role.

 

We’re particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate the following:

 

  • Experience designing and facilitating training or workshops, with strong facilitation skills and a proven ability to engage and connect with diverse audiences
  • 3+ years’ experience in emergency management or related fields such as recovery, infrastructure, or community work
  • A working understanding of the principles of the Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS) would be advantageous
  • Proficiency in the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS)
