Architecture Operations Manager

Auckland Council is seeking an experienced, outcomes-focused leader to oversee architecture operations and manage a team of System Architects. This role is key to strengthening our architecture governance, improving consistency, and enabling timely, high-quality architectural decisions across ICT.

 

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

As the Architecture Operations Manager, you will lead the operational functions of our Architecture Practice and ensure clear processes, consistent governance, and alignment with organisational priorities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading, supporting, and developing a team of System Architects.
  • Establishing and managing architecture governance forums and acting as the Group Architecture Secretariat.
  • Maintaining and improving the architecture repository to ensure accuracy and accessibility.
  • Making timely architectural decisions that balance standards, risk, and practical delivery needs.
  • Managing vendor and third-party relationships relevant to the Architecture Practice.
  • Conducting architecture health checks and monitoring compliance with agreed standards.
  • Working closely with the Chief Architect, GM ICT, and Heads of Development, Delivery, and Platforms.
  • Driving improvements to reduce operational bottlenecks and lift the maturity of the Architecture Practice.
  • Supporting Auckland Council’s commitment to te Tiriti o Waitangi and building confidence in te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, and Māori outcomes within your team.

You are a steady, pragmatic leader who communicates clearly, builds strong relationships, and brings structure to complex environments. You are confident making decisions, skilled at coaching others, and comfortable working across multiple stakeholders.

You will have:

  • 10+ years’ experience leading architecture governance or technical teams.
  • Experience managing vendors and coordinating governance forums.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple workstreams.
  • Experience applying governance within Agile environments.
  • Broad technical knowledge across enterprise, solution, and data architecture.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
  • A practical approach to decision-making, focusing on delivering sound outcomes at pace.
