He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council’s Health, Safety & Wellbeing unit has an opportunity for a permanent full Advisor – Occupational Health and Injury Prevention to join the team! This hybrid role (3x days in the office) is based in the Auckland CBD, with travel required to support our sites.
The Advisor plays a key role in supporting managers, people leaders, and kaimahi by providing expertise in work-related occupational health, injury prevention, and wellbeing, promoting a proactive approach to health management.
This role provides specialist advice and leadership in occupational health and injury prevention across Auckland Council. Supporting AEP compliance and the delivery of the Whanake Ora Hauora Wellbeing Strategy 2025-2028. It partners with the business to drive best-practice initiatives that improve outcomes for kaimahi and foster healthy, safe, and thriving workplaces.
The remuneration range for these roles are $108,630 - $118,000 depending on experience and skillset. Auckland Council's KiwiSaver contribution is additional to base salary.

Ngā kawenga matua: Key responsibilities
The role works closely with leaders across Auckland Council to strengthen occupational health capability, particularly in relation to injury prevention, ACC requirements, and health and safety legislation. By providing expert advice, guidance, and support, the role helps embed best-practice approaches to occupational health and supports the effective identification and management of work-related health risks within day-to-day operations.
It develops and maintains strong relationships with external providers and subject matter experts, ensuring the delivery of high-quality occupational health and injury prevention services.
Day-to-day you could expect to:
- Act as the first point of escalation for occupational health monitoring and injury prevention queries, facilitating access to specialist support where required.
- Review health, discomfort, and incident data to identify trends and inform injury prevention initiatives that reduce harm and improve outcomes for kaimahi.
- Support the organisation to identify, assess, and advise on mitigation of health risks across diverse work environments.
- Deliver injury prevention training programmes, in line with trends and targeted towards higher-risk roles and work environments.
- Support the annual ACC audit, ensuring injury prevention and health monitoring requirements are met in collaboration with Health and Safety teams.
- Contribute to occupational health and injury prevention projects, working collaboratively with internal teams and external specialist providers as required.

We are seeking a strategic and collaborative HSW professional with expertise in occupational health and safety, and a proven track record of delivering programmes that achieve positive outcomes. Highly organised, self-motivated, and adaptable, you'll thrive in an autonomous role and be comfortable navigating ambiguity and changing priorities.
You will bring strong relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across a diverse range of audiences. Skilled at tailoring your approach, you'll influence, engage, and bring people on the journey to drive meaningful change.
Passionate about empowering others to succeed, you'll leverage services, resources, and tools to support capability development and organisational transformation. You'll also demonstrate high emotional intelligence, resilience, and self-awareness, maintaining professional boundaries and effectively managing your own wellbeing while navigating complex and sensitive situations.
We will be looking for specific experience with:
- Relevant tertiary qualification and professional registration in Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, or a related health profession, with a focus on occupational health and injury prevention.
- Registered health professional with a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC) and registration with the relevant New Zealand professional body.
- Minimum 4 years’ experience within in occupational health, injury prevention or a similar health advisory role.
- Proven knowledge of New Zealand health and safety legislation and work-related health practices, with the ability to apply legislative requirements in a practical workplace setting.
- Sound understanding of Te Ao Māori, with the ability to apply te reo Māori
