Auckland Unlimited (AU) is the region’s economic and cultural development agency and an Auckland Council-controlled organisation. Our programmes help make Auckland a desirable place to live, work, visit, invest and do business as part of our broader purpose of enriching cultural and economic life in Tamaki Makaurau.

 

As an AU Board of Directors committee, the Destination Committee (the Committee) is comprised of three AU Board representatives and three accommodation sector representatives. The Committee’s primary function is to assist the AU Board in delivery related to significant destination focussed projects and programmes (including tourism, events and international education) as well as work 50% funded by the Accommodation Provider Targeted Rate (APTR) (temporarily suspended due to Covid).  


He angitūtanga: The opportunity
This is a timely opportunity for a representative of the Auckland accommodation sector to join the Committee. As a member of the Committee, you will be involved in providing guidance and governance over the destination focussed work programme in AU together with making recommendations to the AU Board on various matters during this important time in the history of the accommodation sector.

 

Projects and programmes of work may include: 

  • International and domestic destination marketing
  • Destination management and sustainability
  • Trade marketing
  • Event attraction, sponsorship and leverage (including business events)
  • International student attraction and retention
  • Visitor information provision
  • Event delivery and operational support

 

He kōrero mōu: About you
Alongside governance experience and sound judgement, you will bring proven tourism, events or international education experience.

 

Particular skills and competencies sought:

  • Personal integrity, public service ethos and awareness of a public media profile
  • Commercial acumen, the ability to think strategically and a solid understanding of the wider interest of the publicly accountable shareholder
  • An understanding and commitment to council’s obligation to Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Clear communication and an ability to debate in a reasoned manner
  • Risk assessment and contingency management skills

 

Please note that it is expected that you will either be a payer of the APTR or able to demonstrate representation of accommodation sector interests in Auckland.

 


Commitment Requirement
The Committee will meet between four and eight times per year and on such other occasions as the Chair deems necessary. In addition, as required, you are expected to attend to agenda material prior to meetings and outside of scheduled meetings.

 

You will be available to attend orientation in January 2022 with a view to being fully placed to commence committee member duties from February 2022.

 

Remuneration
As an accommodation sector representative on the Committee, you will be paid an annual fee based on the Auckland Council Fees Framework and Expenses Policy for Appointed Members. In addition, you will be reimbursed for incurred travel, accommodation and other costs associated with committee membership (with the approval of the Committee Chair).

 

Term
The Committee term is two years, for a maximum of two terms.
