He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council’s Waste Solutions department is offering an exciting opportunity for a full-time permanent Waste Planning Advisor to provide technical expertise and strategic advice to strengthen the business intelligence and advisory functions of the Waste Planning team.
A key focus will be developing the team’s capability to collect, analyse, and report on waste data, turning insights into practical actions for a range of stakeholders. You’ll also play a lead role in guiding the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP), helping to drive Auckland’s progress toward its zero-waste goals.
You can expect to:
- Drive continuous improvement in the collection, analysis, and reporting of waste data.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of policies and plans through effective data gathering and analysis.
- Provide specialist advice on waste minimisation and management, including support for legislative implementation.
- Report on compliance with key regulatory requirements, including the Waste Bylaw and Long-Term Plan.
- Support reporting and engagement with Council Committees, Local Boards, and key stakeholders.

The renumeration range for the role is $77,000 - $86,000 annually depending on skillset and experience.

You will bring at least 3 years of experience in a multi-disciplinary environment, ideally within the waste sector, supported by a relevant tertiary qualification. Experience in large, complex, and politically influenced organisations is a strong advantage. We’re seeking a clear and confident communicator with a passion for using data to tell the story of waste. You’re a resilient and positive individual who performs well under pressure, highly organised with strong time management skills, and able to prioritise and lead focus on what matters most.
We will be looking for specific experience with the key role requirements:
- Strong analytical and IT skills, with experience across data platforms (powerBI) and research methodologies.
- Knowledge of carbon accounting and greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting.
- Proven ability to work independently and solve problems to deliver outcomes.
- Confident presenting information with credibility in formal settings.
- Full, clean NZ driving licence is desirable.
