He angitūtanga: The opportunity


We are looking for a Land and Soil Senior Scientist with great analytical and reporting skills.  If you have experience in applied soil science/land management, and you can communicate and translate science effectively to a variety of audiences, then this role in Auckland Council’s Research and Evaluation Unit (RIMU) could be ideal for you.

 

Our RIMU teams are responsible for monitoring and reporting on Auckland’s environment.  We collect, process, analyse and evaluate a wide range of environmental data across the marine, freshwater, land and air domains, often in collaboration with other management agencies and research institutes, to provide high-quality evidence and information to decision makers and Aucklanders.
 

As a Land and Soil Scientist you will be responsible for developing and overseeing core soil quality monitoring programmes across a diverse range of land uses. Key requirements of this role are robust data analysis and interpretation to inform policy and management decisions across council. You will work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure relevance and utility of data and information.


In addition, you will keep abreast of and be involved in national policy statements and national reporting initiatives and research programmes, and be able to use this experience and knowledge to support council operations and policy development. 


He kōrero mōu: About you


You have a relevant Masters or PhD level qualification or have extensive experience in monitoring and research to assess the health of land systems, including experimental/monitoring design, statistical analysis and reporting. In addition, you are familiar with applying and assessing Land Use Capability (LUC) assessments and national monitoring frameworks, systems and policy. 


As this is a senior role, we will value your excellent leadership and mentoring skills, along with your ability to communicate complex environmental data to a wide range of audiences.


An understanding of New Zealand’s regulatory framework and local government processes is desirable as is experience with policy effectiveness monitoring and evaluation.
