We are currently hiring for the Principal Specialist Building Consents role in the Project Assessment team, which is a part of the Building Consents Division at the Auckland Council. The team is responsible for providing building consenting services to ensure Auckland grows with safe and sustainable buildings. We place a strong emphasis on customer-centric delivery and strive to provide the best business services possible.

 

As a Principal Specialist, you will work closely with Team Leaders and Management to achieve our business goals. You will be the go-to expert, providing advanced specialist advice and technical training to the Building Consents Departments on legislative and regulatory matters that affect policy, strategic planning, and practice. The successful candidate will have a significant role in ensuring a consistent, high-quality, and customer-focused approach to building control services within our region.

 

Additionally, you will be the technical lead to building surveyors and provide analysis of technical assessments and procedures to identify risks and make recommendations to the Building Consents lead team.

 

This role requires a keen focus on ensuring continuous improvement of department policies, processes and systems, and addressing any compliance issues identified through internal and external audits. Thus, building and maintaining strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders is crucial for success in this role.

 

Day-to-day you could expect to work on:

 

  • Analyse technical assessments to identify risks and make recommendations to the Building Consents lead team.
  • Provide training and support to the Building Consents team to enable them to participate in improvement initiatives.
  • Provides expert advice on interpreting Building Control regulations, to ensure high standard of service delivery across the region.
  • Coordinate operational activity related to complex building codes and policies as the technical lead for building surveyors.
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders such as regulatory bodies, industry associations, and professional networks to stay informed about emerging trends and regulatory developments in the building sector.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to building surveyors to support their professional development and career advancement within the organisation.
  • Act as a liaison between the Building Consents Department and other business partners within the organisation to facilitate cross-functional collaboration and alignment of goals and objectives.

 

He kōrero mōu: About you

 

This is a substantial and rewarding role which offers variety and opportunities for growth. To excel in this position, you will need to possess excellent communication skills, strong leadership abilities, and extensive experience in the building industry. A solid subject matter knowledge of building construction is essential, along with critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

 

The ideal candidate should have current Residential 3 to Commercial 3 processing competency, Regulation 18 accreditation, advanced knowledge of New Zealand Building Codes and Building Act, and well-rounded knowledge and experience in all facets related to building construction.

 

Furthermore, a high level of attention to detail, a strong process and systems focus, solid project management abilities, and experience training and supporting other team members will be highly regarded.

 

What we will be looking for:

 

  • Excellent understanding of the Building Act 2004, Building Code, and relevant regulations associated with BCA Accreditation.
  • National Diploma in Building Control – Large Buildings (Level 6), New Zealand Diploma in Building Surveying or other equivalent Regulation 18 compliance qualification.
  • 12-15 years’ experience in a Senior Building Surveyor with Commercial competency and/ or Building Services/ Engineering role.
  • Demonstrated capability in the understanding of building industry and processes and the ability to problem-solve and make business improvement recommendations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work with a variety of customers.
  • High degree of numeracy and strong process and system orientation.
  • Knowledge of local authority and private consultancy practices and procedures.
  • Report and policy writing skills.
