The Auckland War Memorial Museum tells the story of New Zealand, its place in the Pacific and its people. Auckland Council seeks a new member to join the Museum Trust Board from 1 October 2025 and continue this important mahi.

 

Your leadership and guidance will support the Museum to be the home of our collective remembering and commemoration and a compelling experience to inspire innovation, curiosity and learning, while also acting as kaitiaki of the building, collections and taonga.

 

He kōrero mōu: About you

 

We are seeking a new board member with appropriate skills and experience help drive the performance of the and outcomes for the Museum.

 

Key attributes sought from a new board member include:

  • expertise to oversee the successful management of assets, renewals and capital projects to ensure that the Museum’s assets and infrastructure are managed effectively and efficiently,
  • ability to provide the board with thorough financial oversight, with strong audit and risk expertise,
  • relevant experience within the arts, culture and/or heritage sectors.
  • general governance competencies and to have a passion for Auckland and improving outcomes for Aucklanders

 

Board members are expected to observe and uphold the spirit of partnership and goodwill envisaged by the Treaty of Waitangi and promote improved outcomes and relationships with Māori. Decisions will be made with a public service ethos and understanding of the operating context of the Museum, its role as a war memorial, the need for appropriate accountability to stakeholders including the Council, the need to seek value for money and to supporting collaboration across the council group and wider cultural sector.

 

You will act with personal integrity and moral leadership with wise and thorough decision-making.

Members of the Museum Trust Board fulfil the functions set out in the Auckland War Memorial Museum Act 1996.  The statutory responsibilities of the Board include oversight of the financial management of the museum, along with the maintenance, management and development of the Museum and to support the delivery of the Museum’s objectives.
