He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Join Te Kaunihera Tāmaki Makaurau Design Ope (Urban Design Unit) and lead the development of the Māori Design Kaupapa Programme. In this leadership role, you’ll contribute to regional and national strategies, influencing projects at site, precinct, centre, and regional scales. Your expertise will shape urban, environmental, and community outcomes through the promotion of place-based design and Māori design principles. You’ll work collaboratively with Mana Whenua and other stakeholders to ensure Māori values are embedded into key strategies, policies, and urban design projects across Tāmaki Makaurau.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead and manage the Māori Design Kaupapa Programme, ensuring the integration of Māori design principles into key strategies and plans.
• Provide expert Māori urban design input into major projects, including the Auckland Plan 2050, Auckland Unitary Plan, and capital programmes.
• Mentor and support the development of Māori design capability within the Tāmaki Makaurau Design Ope.
• Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with Mana Whenua, Mataawhaka, elected members, and external stakeholders.
• Lead the creation of content for the Māori Design Hub within the Auckland Design Manual, setting best practices for Māori urban design.
He kōrero mōu: About you
You are a strategic thinker with extensive experience in urban design or a related field, supported by a relevant qualification such as a bachelor’s degree in urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, urban design, or an equivalent field. Your leadership roles have enhanced your expertise, and you have a deep understanding of Māori design principles, with a strong commitment to creating positive urban outcomes for Māori communities. With excellent communication and relationship-building skills, you are adept at working with diverse stakeholders to integrate Māori design principles into projects. Your experience in mentoring and developing teams, coupled with your dedication to continuous improvement, will be key to the success of the Tāmaki Makaurau Design Ope.
