He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience (HWFR) department is dedicated to managing, planning, and developing stormwater systems. We work collaboratively with iwi and communities to future-proof Auckland’s water, ensuring healthy environments and resilient stormwater systems. 

We are seeking two passionate and motivated interns to support separate work programmes that span several technical fields including hydrology, data science, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and environmental engineering. You will work alongside senior staff and technical leads to help build flood resilience and improve Auckland’s stormwater systems. 

Each internship focuses on a different area of work as outlined below:

Stormwater Data and Technology
o    Assist in developing a storm reporting framework and historical reporting library
o    Perform hydrological data analysis to support our work programmes 
o    Compile datasets, exploring additional metadata and typology including data set cataloguing
o    Support the deployment and performance tracking of our Stage 2 hotspot blockage monitoring cameras
o    Monitor and maintain our Moata digital data platform in a day-to-day caretaker capacity

Hydraulic Modelling
o    Contribute to GIS-based tasks and data analysis to help in the delivery of our hydraulic modelling
o    Assist with hydraulic modelling to simulate catchment behaviour, drainage performance and flood response

He kōrero mōu: About you
You have a keen interest in hydrological processes, stormwater infrastructure planning, and digital tools used for stormwater management and are keen to apply your academic knowledge to real-world problems. You bring strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset, along with strong technical skills and experience in data analytics, GIS, environmental systems modelling and/or hydraulic modelling. 

To apply you must:
•    Be in your penultimate year studying towards a relevant Bachelor's degree, or continuing into a Master’s level of study in 2026.
•    Be eligible to work in New Zealand full-time from November 2025 - February 2026
