He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Are you passionate about stormwater and environmental protection? Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters and Flood Resilience (HWFR) department is looking for dedicated interns to help us manage, plan, and develop our stormwater systems. We work collaboratively with iwi and communities to future-proof Auckland’s water, ensuring healthy environments and resilient stormwater systems. 

As an intern you’ll be working in one of the following roles:

•    Asset Management - Support the Asset team by reviewing CCTV inspection data and analysing stormwater pipe condition to help prioritise and plan infrastructure renewals across Auckland (For Engineering students only)
•    Community Flood Resilience - Work with communities on projects that build flood resilience and enhance local understanding of flood risks 
•    Design and Delivery - Assist with planning, designing, and overseeing the construction and implementation of stormwater infrastructure projects across Auckland (For Engineering students only)
•    Network Compliance - Join our compliance team to assess sites for overland flow path compliance, develop a private stormwater device database, or support resource consent compliance 
•    Operations - Support our operational teams across Auckland to address stormwater network issues while ensuring best practice, safety, and customer satisfaction (For Engineering students only)
•    Rural Community Programmes – work with the Wai Ora Rural Partnerships team in one of the following roles: 
o     Support our farmers to improve water quality (Agriculture or Horticulture degree or rural background preferred)
o    Deliver ecological initiatives in partnership with farmers (Environmental Science, Ecology, or Conservation background preferred)
•    Sustainability –Support the Sustainable Values team in integrating sustainability and environmental outcomes into stormwater projects through research, data analysis, and collaboration across teams
•    Urban Community Programmes - Support our Wai Ora Partnerships Urban team with funding applications, health and safety plans, data management, coordination and resource needs for community initiatives such as Wai Care
•    Water Quality – Assist with field sampling, data analysis and reporting for our Safeswim or Safe Networks programmes 
•    Waterways Planning – Support geomorphic catchment assessment projects using geospatial tools and skills, or contribute to pond and wetland management through data analysis, site visits, and condition assessments. 

All roles accrue practical work experience hours that count toward accredited BE(Hons) programmes

As an intern in the Healthy Waters and Flood Resilience team, you are enthusiastic about learning and contributing to the planning, development, and management of stormwater systems. You bring a proactive attitude, excellent problem-solving skills, and a keen interest in environmental protection. Your ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and communities, including iwi, will be essential in helping us to achieve our goals. 

To apply you must:
•    Be in your penultimate year studying towards a relevant Bachelor's degree, or continuing into a Master’s level of study in 2026.
•    Be eligible to work in New Zealand full-time from November 2025 - February 2026
