He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters and Flood Resilience (HWFR) department is dedicated to managing, planning and developing stormwater systems to protect our environment. We work collaboratively with iwi and communities to ensure the life-supporting capacity of water, aligning with Auckland’s Climate Plan. 

We are seeking passionate and motivated interns to join our teams. As a HWFR intern you will support our communication and content initiatives, helping to engage and inform Aucklanders about our stormwater projects, water quality initiatives, and public safety education. 

As an intern, you’ll be working in one of these three roles: 

Stakeholder Engagement
o    Create engaging content for various platforms, including our Safeswim  website and community outreach materials. 
o    Assist in managing requests for information and service related to the public stormwater network, waterways, and harbours. 
o    Collaborate with the team to educate, engage, and inform the public about stormwater management and water quality initiatives. 
o    Support the planning and execution of stormwater projects and community-led initiatives.

Communication Support: Assist our customers, community and local boards, by managing requests for information, complaints and queries related to the public stormwater network, waterways, flood plains, and harbours. Being comfortable pronouncing and using basic Te Reo Māori in emails, meetings and conversations is ideal for this role. 

Strategic Reporting: Assist with communications and reporting for the major flood resilience project Making Space for Water, co-funded by central government.

You are a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a budding interest in environmental management and sustainability. Your bring strong communication and writing skills that help you to create engaging content and have a passion for customer centricity. You enjoy working collaboratively in a team and are eager to learn from experienced professionals.  

You may also have some experience or familiarity with customer databases, digital content creation or social media platforms, and are keen to develop these technical skills further. 

To apply you must:
•    Be in your penultimate year studying towards a relevant Bachelor's degree, or continuing into a Master’s level of study in 2026.
•    Be eligible to work in New Zealand full-time from November 2025- February 2026
