Location: Auckland Wide, NZ, 1010
Company: Auckland Council
He angitutanga mutunga kore mō te ihumanea pēnā i a koe: Endless possibilities for an intern like you at Auckland Council
He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience (HWFR) department is dedicated to managing, planning, and developing stormwater systems. We work collaboratively with iwi and communities to future-proof Auckland’s water, ensuring healthy environments and resilient stormwater systems.
We are seeking a passionate and motivated intern to join our Commercial and Property team. As a Healthy Waters and Flood Resilience Intern, you will support our team in working behind the scenes to help big infrastructure and housing projects across Auckland happen – even when things get tricky!
Our team delivers three key programmes, and as an intern, you’ll have the chance to support different parts of each.
• Network Upgrade Programme: We help developers get access to land and funding so pipes and drains can be built where needed.
• Haumanu Programme: We deliver stream and river enhancement projects and track those environmental benefits, enabling developers to meet their regulatory offset requirements.
• HWFR Support Programme: We support stormwater and flood resilience projects by helping with commercial and property negotiations and agreements, and by helping to resolve customer disputes.
Our team works with organisations like Kāinga Ora, KiwiRail, NZTA, and Watercare — so you’ll see how all the big players come together to make Auckland work.
As an Intern you might:
• Help research and review property files and access agreements
• Support with customer communications and admin
• Attend meetings with project managers and engineers
• Learn about how council plans and delivers large public stormwater works
• Get exposure to real-world environmental, legal and property issues
Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer
Grow your skills and start your career. Our internship programme ensures you get to do real work that matters and learn from experts in your field. You'll engage in meaningful work, contributing to the development of Auckland as a world-class city.
We offer a supportive environment, with mentorship and networking opportunities. You’ll be part of our internship whānau and will be supported every step of the way by a team who want you to succeed, including a buddy, intern liaison, Careers Team, and the wider intern cohort.
You’ll spend the summer developing your technical and soft skills, and experiencing what life is like at Auckland Council. By the end of the internship, you’ll hopefully have a good idea of where you want your career to go. Interns may receive priority consideration for our 2-year Graduate Programme, setting the stage for your future career.
He kōrero mōu: About you
You have a keen interest in property law, infrastructure delivery, and how legal processes support environmental outcomes, and you're motivated to gain hands-on experience in this space. You bring strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude, along with a developing understanding of property law, planning frameworks and public sector processes.
Your ability to analyse information, stay organised, and work collaboratively will help the team deliver complex stormwater projects and navigate property-related challenges. You may have some experience with legal research tools, property databases, or Microsoft Office, and you’re keen to build these technical skills further.
To apply you must:
• Be in your penultimate year studying towards a relevant Bachelor's degree, or continuing into a Master’s level of study in 20256.
