Auckland Council's Licensing & Compliance department has two permanent and one fixed-term opportunity for Environmental Monitoring Officers to join our Central, Northwest, and South teams. Reporting to the Team Leader Environmental Monitoring, these roles are based in either Manukau, Albany, or the Auckland CBD. Flexible working arrangements are available, including the option to work from home once you have successfully completed your initial training and shadowing period.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in protecting and enhancing Auckland's natural environment. As an Environmental Monitoring Officer, you will be responsible for monitoring resource consent compliance, managing breaches and remediation activities, and taking appropriate enforcement action where required.

Through your work, you will help ensure development and land use activities are carried out responsibly while delivering positive environmental outcomes for Auckland's communities.

You could expect to work on:
•    Monitoring active resource consents and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and agreed processes.
•    Investigating non-compliance issues, assessing environmental impacts, and developing appropriate enforcement responses.
•    Providing guidance, education, and support to consent holders to achieve and maintain compliance.
•    Managing remediation activities and enforcement cases, including gathering and preparing evidence where required.
•    Contributing to business improvement initiatives that strengthen compliance services and reduce environmental risks.
•    Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to achieve positive environmental outcomes.

This role is ideal for an emerging environmental professional looking to build a career in compliance, resource management, or environmental monitoring. You may be a recent graduate or have some experience in an environmental, regulatory, planning, or customer-facing environment. 

Passionate about protecting Auckland's natural environment, you'll bring a proactive mindset, sound judgement, and a willingness to learn while contributing to positive environmental outcomes for our communities.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
•    A relevant tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Resource Management, Planning, Ecology, Geography, or a related field.
•    Strong communication skills and the confidence to build relationships with landowners, consent holders, and key stakeholders.
•    Sound judgement, curiosity, and a solutions-focused approach to investigating and resolving issues.
•    A current full New Zealand driver's licence is required, and you must be eligible to hold a warrant under the Resource Management Act 1991 and Local Government Act 2002

Experience in environmental compliance, resource management, planning, local government, or a regulatory environment would be advantageous but is not essential.
