Spend your summer doing work that matters. Auckland Council’s Summer Internship Programme is from 23 November to 19 February and offers paid, hands-on experience at the Living Wage rate of $29.90 per hour. If you’re in your second-to-last year of study or continuing into a master’s programme, this is your chance to grow your skills, build your network and contribute to meaningful mahi for Tāmaki Makaurau.

He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Our Environmental Monitoring Unit monitor compliance with resource consents to avoid, remedy or mitigate any adverse effects a project may have on the environment. You will be given the opportunity to shadow our staff, gaining valuable exposure to high-risk and complex projects across the region, and be given your own work packet of lower risk sites to work through on your own.

You’ll be placed in one of our five teams across the region and provided with a positive, supportive environment where you’ll be encouraged to learn, grow, and contribute. Many of our previous interns have returned to us after graduating to begin their careers.

We offer a supportive environment, with mentorship and networking opportunities. You’ll be part of our internship whānau and will be supported every step of the way by a team who want you to succeed, including a buddy, intern liaison, Careers Team, and the wider intern cohort.

You’ll spend the summer developing your technical and soft skills, and experiencing what life is like at Auckland Council. By the end of the internship, you’ll hopefully have a good idea of where you want your career to go. Interns may receive priority consideration for our 2-year Graduate Programme, setting the stage for your future career.

He kōrero mōu: About you
You are enthusiastic about learning how national and local govt environmental legislation is implemented to ensure projects and activities across Auckland are undertaken in a responsible manner.

You have a keen interest in the environmental impacts of development in Auckland and are motivated to gain practical experience in this area.

We welcome applications from students studying BSc or BPlan or equivalent qualification in environmental/resource management.

You must:
•    Be in your second-to-last year of a relevant bachelor’s degree, or continuing into a master’s degree programme.
•    Be eligible to work in New Zealand full-time from 23 November 2026 – 19 February 2027
•    Hold a minimum of a restricted New Zealand driver licence
