About the Auckland Future Fund

Established through the Long-term Plan 2024 - 2034, the Auckland Future Fund was created to enhance Auckland’s long-term financial and physical resilience, protect the real value of the council’s intergenerational assets, and generate sustainable cash returns that reduce reliance on rates. The fund, currently capitalised at approximately $1.3 billion and managed by global investment manager Vontobel. The board provides oversight of the fund’s investment strategy and holds the fund manager to account for its performance and implementation.

The Opportunity

This is a new appointment that will strengthen the governance capacity of the AFFTL board and bring additional perspectives to its work. The successful candidate will join a board of experienced investment professionals and contribute to decisions that have a direct and enduring bearing on Auckland’s financial wellbeing.

What we are looking for

  • Very strong experience of financial markets and investments, with a demonstrated track record of managing, overseeing, or advising on investment portfolios of significant scale. This may include experience across equities, fixed income, alternative assets, or multi-asset global portfolios, with an understanding of the governance frameworks and fiduciary obligations that apply to funds of this nature.

  • Experience developing and implementing investment strategies, including the ability to evaluate asset allocation decisions, assess the performance and fee structures of fund managers, and provide informed governance direction on any future amendments to the fund’s investment policy and objectives.

  • Commercial experience and entrepreneurial nous, with leadership experience within a successful private or listed enterprise. The board is seeking candidates who bring broader commercial perspectives beyond investment management, with the ability to identify opportunities and risks in pursuit of the fund’s long-term purpose.

In addition, all AFFTL directors are expected to demonstrate a passion for Auckland and commitment to improving outcomes for Aucklanders, an understanding of public sector accountability and financial stewardship, the ability to uphold the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and promote improved outcomes for Māori, and a commitment to integrating climate considerations into the work of the organisation.
