Customer and Communications Interns - Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience (HWFR) department is dedicated to managing, planning, and developing stormwater systems. We work collaboratively with iwi and communities to future-proof Auckland’s water, ensuring healthy environments and resilient stormwater systems.

We are seeking passionate and motivated interns to join our customer support and stakeholder engagement teams. As a Healthy Waters and Flood Resilience Intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience helping Aucklanders by responding to stormwater enquiries and information requests, or by contributing to communication and engagement initiatives that help inform Aucklanders about stormwater, water quality and public safety.

What you’ll be doing during your internship

During your 12-week internship, you’ll be part of either our Customer Support Team or Stakeholder Engagement Team, supporting mahi that helps connect Aucklanders with Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience services, projects and initiatives.

As an intern, you’ll be working in one of these two roles:

Communication Support:  

• Assist our customers, community and local boards by managing requests for information, complaints and queries related to the public stormwater network, waterways, flood plains, and harbours. 
• Strong writing skills are essential for this role. You will create content for different audiences and channels. AI tools can support brainstorming and editing, but the ability to write original content is key to success in this position.
• Confidence using and pronouncing basic Te Reo Māori in emails, meetings and everyday conversations would be an advantage.

Stakeholder Engagement:

• Create engaging content for various printed and digital platforms, including our Flood Viewer website and community outreach materials. 
• Collaborate with the team to educate, engage, and inform the public about stormwater management and water quality initiatives. 
• Support the planning and execution of stormwater projects and community-led initiatives through communications plans and stakeholder analysis.
• Directly engage with Aucklanders through community events, letter drops and online by responding to queries.

You are a motivated and enthusiastic individual with an interest in environmental management and sustainability. You have strong communication and writing skills, with the ability to create engaging content and connect with different audiences. You are passionate about delivering great customer experiences and enjoy finding ways to make a positive impact.

You thrive in a collaborative environment, enjoy working with others, and are keen to learn from experienced professionals. You're curious, proactive, and excited to develop your skills while contributing to meaningful projects.

You may also have some exposure to customer databases, digital content creation, or social media platforms through study, work, volunteering, or personal interests. You're eager to build on this experience and further develop your technical and digital skills in a professional setting.

 Eligibility

• Be in your second-to-last year of a relevant bachelor’s degree, or continuing into a master’s degree programme.
• Be eligible to work in New Zealand full-time from 23 November 2026 – 19 February 2027
• A New Zealand restricted driver’s license is preferred but not mandatory
