Community organisations play a vital role in strengthening Auckland's communities. Through community leases and occupancy agreements, we enable sports clubs, arts groups, social services, recreation providers and other community organisations to access council-owned land and facilities. As a Community Lease Specialist, you will help ensure these spaces continue to create positive social outcomes for Aucklanders.

We’re looking for a Community Lease Specialist to join our Leasing team here at Auckland Council.  As a Community Lease Specialist, you’ll be making a vital contribution to our region by ensuring our facilities are utilised to their full potential. You will provide expert advice on community occupancy matters, navigate legislative requirements, prepare decision-making reports for local boards, and manage a portfolio of leases from application through to execution and ongoing management.   

Your main responsibilities will include delivering your leasing work programme, processing applications for community occupancy on Council land and buildings, managing relationships with tenants and other key stakeholders, completing the statutory requirements for occupancies, as well as making recommendations and reporting to governance boards for approval on new and existing leases, variations, assignments and other lease functions. 

You will also be managing existing leases in a pro-active way to ensure all Council responsibilities and community outcomes are being met while maintaining accurate lease data and property files. You will prepare and manage rent reviews, support operational recoveries and deliver property related value for money through community occupancies.

This team currently sits in the Property Management unit in the Resilience & Infrastructure directorate. However, through the Transforming for Tāmaki Makaurau change programme, the Property Management unit will move to Group Finance reporting into the Commercial and Property department.

With an analytical mind and impeccable communication skills, we welcome applicants from property, leasing, legal, planning, or contract management backgrounds who enjoy working with people, navigating legislative frameworks and delivering practical solutions. Ideally, you will have a working understanding of local government legislation and the Reserves Act, and are interested in developing your understanding of Māori perspectives and contributing to positive outcomes for Māori communities.

You will come with a degree or relevant tertiary qualification (i.e. property, law, administration or related field) or equivalent gained experience in property or contract management environments. You are great at multitasking and will be a natural at building relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders. You are skilled in negotiating your way through complex or political environments and have to ability to develop and provide quality advice. As a committed problem solver, you’ll have a knack for thinking strategically. You’ll be comfortable using Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint, while any experience with SAP and GIS will be well regarded. 

This role requires travel to other parts of the Auckland region, so it is important that you hold a full, clean New Zealand driver’s license.

Salary: $90,000 - $104,000
