He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council Group is seeking a Communications and Engagement Advisor to support the successful delivery of our Group Shared Services (GSS) programme. This is a rare opportunity to help shape how information is shared, how change is understood, and how we bring people on a journey of transformation across the Council Group.
You’ll play a critical role in building awareness and engagement through well-planned, inclusive, and timely internal communications. Working alongside our GSS leadership, project teams, and communications colleagues across the group, you’ll be at the heart of a complex change programme that aims to streamline and innovate shared services for the benefit of all kaimahi.
Te hiranga o tēnei mahi: Why this role matters
The Group Shared Services (GSS) programme is a foundational step in simplifying, aligning, and scaling service delivery across the Auckland Council Group. Focus is on moving to streamlined common functions and activities, eliminated duplication and ensuring consistent, high quality shared services powered by fit for purpose technologies - as well as enabling greater joined up innovation.
As our Communications and Engagement Advisor, you’ll ensure people across the organisation understand what’s changing, why it matters, and how it impacts them. Through compelling communications, you’ll help reduce uncertainty, foster trust, and celebrate progress as we embed new ways of working across the group.
You’ll also support our commitment to building shared services that reflect and uphold the principles of te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi — ensuring these values are reflected in how we speak, engage, and support our kaimahi.
Ngā kawenga matua: Key responsibilities
• Deliver engaging, timely, and audience-focused communications that support the GSS programme and its transformation goals
• Collaborate with GSS leaders, project teams, and Council entity comms teams to ensure consistent, aligned messaging across the Auckland Council Group
• Develop high-quality content across internal channels, including newsletters, intranet updates, info packs and leadership comms
• Provide trusted communications advice and support to GSS projects, contributing to change adoption and stakeholder understanding
• Measure the effectiveness of communications and use insights to continuously improve content, channels, and engagement outcomes

You’re a strategic communicator who brings clarity, empathy, and cultural awareness to your work. Confident in fast-paced environments, you know how to tailor messaging for diverse audiences, manage competing priorities, and support people through complex transformation. You build trusted relationships easily and understand how communications can make change feel more human.
You’ll bring:
• 5+ years’ experience in communications, PR, or stakeholder engagement
• A proven track record supporting large-scale transformation
• Excellent writing and editing skills across multiple channels
• Experience in or with the public sector is advantageous
