He angitūtanga: The opportunity

This is a rare opportunity to make your mark as a Principal within one of the largest planning teams in the Southern Hemisphere. As the Principal Specialist – Planning, you will work closely with the Resource Consents Manager to deliver an efficient, effective and comprehensive resource consent service by providing specialist planning advice on consenting matters.

Joining a team of technical experts, you’ll be driving planning and resource management best practice through the collaborative management and delivery of innovative continuous improvement initiatives across the region. You’ll be working with and mentoring a world-class team as you review complex applications, manage hearings, appeals and objections, coordinate responses to issues such as legislative change, and more. You’ll also be helping Council effectively contribute towards the delivery of our Māori Responsiveness Plan for Tāmaki Makaurau.

He kōrero mōu: About you

You’ll be a Planner with at least 8 years’ experience in all aspects of resource consents and planning application processing, including the RMA and local government legislation. You will have a tertiary qualification in urban planning, environmental management, or another relevant discipline, and ideally hold NZPI membership. You’ll have some exposure to tangata whenua and Te Tiriti o Waitangi issues, and a desire to work with Māori and within Māori paradigms.

This role will see you working collaboratively across Council, as well as with other agencies and communities, so strong relationship and stakeholder management skills are a must. You’ll have proven experience in finding innovative solutions to complex technical issues and maintain a strong customer-focus in your work. As this position will require you to occasionally travel around the region using Auckland Council vehicles, you must hold a valid and clean NZ driver’s license.

Our Resource Consents unit processes more than 17,000 consents annually and facilitates a wide range of development projects, from major subdivisions and nationally significant infrastructure projects to houses, apartment buildings and shopping centres. You will be working for an organisation that embraces flexible working; we can offer Work from Home days and flexible hours to suit your lifestyle. We offer a competitive salary, and varied learning and career progression opportunities across the wider Council group. You’ll be joining a team of dedicated and respected experts working collaboratively across the region to contribute to Auckland’s growth and development. We are committed to diversity, have a culture built on trust and valuing individual contributions, and are driven to provide the right outcomes for our customers and our environment.
