He angitūtanga: The Opportunity 
The Democracy and Engagement department has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Advisor to join our Lead Team.


The world is changing, as are the ways we can meaningfully engage our citizens and communities across Tamaki Makaurau through digital and non-digital mediums. Best practise council led engagement has an integral role in lifting public trust in regional and local democracy. As the champion of council led engagement innovation and best practise your role involves embedding an engagement driven culture as well as improving end to end engagement performance.         


Reporting to the GM Democracy & Engagement, an important priority over the next few months will be leading the refresh of the engagement component of the Significance and Engagement Policy, looking at principles and standards of offline and online engagement, managing relationships both internally (i.e. digital, communications, key delivery partners) and externally.


You will be working alongside key business partners to clarify changes that will make the current policy fit for purpose in a changing external environment, while being mindful of sections which cannot change.


In the longer term, you will also look at refining operational guidelines that align to the policy to support implementation and deployment of new tools in line with the Engagement Performance Framework to improve engagement performance outcomes (reach, participation, satisfaction, and influence).


As part of the Democracy and Engagement department Lead Team, you will play an integral role in collaborative management decisions to achieve performance goals and maintain a vibrant engaged staff culture  


He kōrero mōu: About you


You’ll bring extensive technical knowledge and previous leadership experience in community or citizen engagement for decision-making in a relevant field.


Your background may demonstrate previous experience in Communications, Community Engagement, Social Change, or Innovation coupled with a relevant qualification in social sciences or a related discipline.


Highly proficient in managing stakeholder relationships in complex settings, you will bring significant knowledge and experience working with engagement technologies and using a range of engagement methodologies.  


Experience in leading project teams to achieve successful outcomes coupled with extensive communication and report writing skills will be key here.
