He angitūtanga: The opportunity 
 

The newly created role of General Manager Active Communities is a unique, influential and hugely impactful leadership opportunity within the Customer and Community Services directorate (approx. 3,100 people) at Auckland Council. 
 

Following a recent restructure within the Customer and Community Services directorate, the Active Communities department will consist of the largest network of Council owned pools and leisure centres in Australasia. 
 

You will be responsible for leading this department of up to 1,000 people and charged with leading the department’s strategic initiatives, including: 
 

  • Optimising and enhancing the business performance of the pools & leisure network; 
  • Helping our services respond to changing customer needs; 
  • Creating a supportive and collaborative team culture; 
  • Fostering well-formed partnerships that deliver on shared outcome of a healthy and active Auckland 

 

Your remit will also include Early Childhood Education (ECE), Sports & Recreation, community sport relationships and partnership investment. 


This exciting and impactful senior leadership role is well placed to make a difference on a significant scale with the opportunity to build on a set of great foundations, and actively lead an operational turn around. Change has already begun, and you will play an active role in leading both an operational and cultural transformation. 


You will bring your extensive deep operational expertise, willingness to listen and engage with stakeholders, exceptional leadership skills of vast teams of people (primarily frontline), build a collaborative culture with other GMs and departments within C & CS and positively impact how Auckland’s future is shaped.  

 

He kōrero mōu: About you
 

Coming from a similar GM level or senior leadership role, you will have significant experience in a complex multi-site operational environment, in running a complex operations business and in change management. 


Well known for being commercially astute, and with a track record of customer focus and delivery, you’ll also bring inspiring, inclusive and engaging leadership with the ability to create a positive and high performing culture, and pride yourself on building trust and strong collaborative partnerships.
